"To live is to suffer; to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering." says the German philosopher and cultural critic Friedrich Nietzsche — a quote to ponder when we find ourselves in a challenging situation in times when life is not so friendly with us.
Mary Grace Garcia, or Mary, as we know her, is living by this quote as she's bravely facing an extraordinary life challenge battling a dreaded disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
ALS is a rare neurological disease that primarily affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movements like chewing, walking, and talking. Sadly, there is no known cure for ALS, but patients suffering from it can be more comfortable with pain management options and treatments to increase survival — the only hope for patients suffering from it.
Mary hopes to survive. She hopes to have a little time to enjoy walking, have an endless chat with her family and friends, enjoy her daily cups of coffee, and take as many pictures as possible while she can.
